The Black cat and Other Stories / Чорний кіт та інші історії (American Library)
По Е.А.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) - a classic of American literature, a man of brilliant talent and tragic fate. The proposed collection includes Poe's stories written in Gothic style whose heroes are distinguished for their unusual disposition and eccentric behaviour. The stories excel in deep psychologism, extreme situations in which only those strong in spirit survive. Mastery combination of mystical elements, horror scenes, the deeds which are at variance with generally accepted norms of life and death, with romance, satire, hints and allusions makes Edgar Poe's works interesting and attractive for today's readers as well.

England, my England. (English Library)
Лоуренс Д.Г.
"England, My England" — a collection of stories by one of the leading British writers David Herbert Lawrence (1885—1930). The author's world views were essentially influenced by the events of the First World War which he condemned as a manifestation of the extreme insanity, trying in his works to propound the recipe of salvation. In particular, the writer reckoned that a man should defer to his own inner desires and feelings and saw the solution in setting free instinctive energy. Just because of it, all the stories of the collection are about love, initial, sensual and passionate; about relations in which "he" and "she" are eager to implement the potential laid up in a man by nature.

Frankenstein: or the Mordern Prometheus / Франкенштейн, або сучасний Прометей. (English Library)
Shelley M.
"Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus" is the first and best-known novel by the English writer Mary Shelley (1797—1851) which she wrote being 19 years old. The book quickly gained in popularity and exercised noticeable influence over the whole world art. It is a history of a scientist who decided to follow God's example and create a man... an artificial one. And his attempt turned out well. Actually, the intention, noble from the very start, having been realized in life, had pernicious consequences — the creature raised his arm against his creator aiming at punishing him and, in one go, the whole human kind.

The legend of sleepy hollow / Легенда про сонну балку та інші історії. (American Library)
Washington I.
The proposed collection comprises the best-known works by Washington Irving (1783—1859), the founder of the American short-story prose. Being over head and ears in love with the legends about the first settlers on the shores of the Hudson, the writer takes their plots as a basis for his stories. Still, his mythical heroes are often endowed with not fairy-tale features at all. They are go-ahead, quick-witted, they objectively perceive their surroundings. That is why the author's novelle breathe humor, easiness, and irony, thrill the readers with the mixture of the serious and the ludicrous, of fiction and reality. Having united illusion and triviality, Irving determined the ways of the development of American romanticism and forever went down in history of the world writers' community as one of the first classic-romanticist in American literature.

To the lighthouse / До маяка. (English Library)
Woolf V.
"To the Lighthouse" is one of the best-known novels by the British writer, a brilliant representative of modernistic prose Virginia Woolf (1882—1941). This work is to some degree autobiographical. The writer copied the main heroes — Mr and Mrs Ramsay — from her parents. That's just they who represent in the novel two opposite worlds: male — cold, logic, impatient one, and female — the world of warmth, understanding, comfort, sympathy. In spite of this, the role of the characters in the novel is rather relative because Virginia Wbolf's style is unusual: she portrays not so much her heroes and their deeds, as thoughts, ideas, and moods, forming in this way a new psychological manner of writing and giving orienting points for all the modern literature.

Love of life (American Library)
Лоуренс Д.Г.
Jack London (1876—1916) — a writer whose works are enthusiastically read all over the world. His collection "Love of Life" is one of the brilliant pearls of his Northern stories cycle. Alaska is the place where each person should reveal their own real features. The North makes equal the poor and the rich; the intense cold does not take into account the infirmity; harsh, biting wind is indifferent to the social status, and a wild beast does not discriminate between social standings. In the confrontation with the severe nature, the heroes of the adducted works vanquish not only thanks to their courage, endurance, energy, but first and foremost, due to the strength of mind, an obsession with life, the capability even in the extreme situations to remain a Human.

Porter E.H.
"Just David" is one more novel by a world-famous American writer Eleanor H. Porter (1868—1920), the author of the best-seller about Pollyanna.
