Each of them has his own goal. And each of them gets what he deserves: some of them get treasures, some of them — the power by descent, and some — fair wages of perpetration.

But the finale of the play is tragic. The hostilities and regrettable coincidence entail the death of the lovers. This death is a defiant challenge to the society which, behind the hatred and strife, is unable to see the grandeur of love.

Вильгельм Гауф — немецкий писатель и новеллист. Он родился в Штутгарте в 1802 году, в большой семье. После окончания университета устроился на работу репетитором и наставником детей министра обороны. Именно для полюбившихся учеников Гауф и начал писать свои волшебные сказки. Сразу же после выхода их в свет писатель стал знаменитым. Мистические, иногда страшные, иногда грустные, эти сказки нравятся и детям, и взрослым, ведь Гауф относится к тем немногим авторам, кто умел сделать из заурядных легенд о привидениях и бедняках, наказывающих злых богачей, волшебные, яркие, запоминающиеся шедевры, которые интересно читать и по сей день. Несмотря на то что он умер очень молодым — в 25 лет, его литературное наследие состоит из трех сборников сказок (один из которых был издан уже после его смерти), нескольких романов и поэм. Эти произведения навсегда вписали имя Вильгельма Гауфа в историю мировой литературы.

"Almayer's Folly" is the first novel by an English writer of distinction Joseph Conrad (1857—1924). Its publication immediately made Conrad's name popular in the English literary set. On the account of this novel, the critics called him "Kipling of the Malay Archipelago". Even today, the book draws the reader's attention due to its unexpected reversals of the plot, psychological persuasiveness, humanity, author's deep reflections on a man's character, eloquent dialogues, colourful descriptions of nature, and life peculiarities of the Malay Archipelago population. The novel will assuredly be interesting for a modern reader as well.

Its plot is based on the adventures of a young New York millionaire, Francis Morgan, his friend and distant relative Henry and charming Leoncia — all of them are united by the search of Maya's treasures and romantic love. Dangerous wanderings through the Cordilleras, mystical prophecies, mysterious caves where every step hides deadly danger, stockjobbing intrigues, the insidiousness of enemies, and the betrayal of some friends — this is the way which the heroes of the novel have to overcome. The novel is very easily read; it arouses belief in genuine friendship, true love, and such people's virtues as honesty, courage, nobility, and self-sacrifice.
