Among the cases which Sherlock Holmes investigates in this collection are not only those ones in which the peccable nature of the criminals and human weak points are being revealed ("Silver Blaze", "The Cardboard Box", "The Stockbroker's Clerk", "The Gloria Scotf), but also the cases in which the solutions of them impel the detective's clients to take humane decisions and commit noble deeds ("The Yellow Face"); in one of the stories, Holmes even tries to reveal the state secret of the Charles I and Charles II epochs ("The Musgrave Ritual"). In all these cases his logical thought, his attention to details, the knack of analysing remain worthy of amazement and enchant.

The stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896—1940) which are included into the collection are filled with adventures and romanticism. They display the integrated picture of the American society's life in the Jazz Age which reveled in prosperity, squandered money and cherished the ambitious hopes. The writer's heroes scoop from the horn of plenty and seek adventures and his heroines in their escapades do not yield to men in their daring and determination. The proposed works reveal the author's ability of penetrating deeply into the psychology of his contemporaries, delivering the nicest shades of their mood as well as poignancy of their feelings. Humor, mild irony and lyricism which permeate

"Cabbages and Kings" is the only novel by O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862—1910), an acknowledged master of small prose. It consists of the short stories which, in picaresque-adventure manner, describe the life of the careless inhabitants of the imaginary "banana" republic of Anchuria lost in the tropical paradise of the Caribbean coast. This is a real Eldorado for the swindlers, dealers, and smugglers of every stripe and sample. In pursuit of easy profit they fall upon the brainiest jobberies and frauds often getting into comic situations, still coming unscathed out of the battle. Despite their adventurism, the heroes of the novel evoke sincere sympathy giving assurance that any life troubles can be overcome.

The Age of Innocence = Ïîðà íåâèííîñò³. (American Library) Edith Wharton

"The Age of Innocence" is the best-known novel by the American writer Edith Wharton (1862—1937) for which she got the Pulitzer Prize. The action of the novel unfolds in the 70s of the 19th century and, by the author's confession, it was her escape into the memories of childhood about America which had disappeared long ago, the attempt to reconcile that old world with the new one which arose after the First World War. The writer touchingly and at the same time ironically narrates the story of love of Newland Archer, a respectable young lawyer, and Countess Olenska, an extravagant cousin of his bride. Her heroes suffer badly, strive for happiness, but will they have enough moral powers to assert their feelings?

The Battle of Life; The Haunted Man and the Ghost‘s Bagrain = Áèòâà æèòòÿ; Îäåðæèìèé òà óãîäà ç ïðèâèäîì (English Library) Dickens Charles

The Christmas tales by Charles Dickens (1812— 1870) remind people about high moral truths and real human values. The main heroes of this book come, by their own way, to understanding the importance of charity, friendship, mutual assistance, family comfort — the things without which it is impossible to build up happy life. Infinitely kind heart of the nearest and dearest person melts the ice in the soul of "haunted" scientist Redlaw and incredibly sacrificial love helps two sisters Jeddler to conquer the field in the complicated battle of life.

The Call of the Wild and Other Stories = Ïîêëèê ïðåäê³â òà ³íø³ îïîâ³äàííÿ (American Library) London J.

The gem of the works by Jack London (1876—1916) remains his northern cycle. On the arctic expanses, hearts obey strange laws incomprehensible for those ones who have never been in these far-off lands. The heroes of the writer's works — Indians who assert their old-established customs, white people — unbidden strangers in search of enrichment, clever and devoted dogs — have to struggle for their subsistence with natural forces as well as with one another. The North becomes the most severe probation of the people's and animals' potentialities and only the unconquerable strength of mind and will help them survive in these extreme conditions.

The Prince Who Was a Thief and Other Storie = Ïðèíö-çëîä³é òà ³íø³ îïîâ³äàííÿ (American Library) Theodore Dreiser

Theodore Dreiser (1871—1945) is one of the most outstanding writers-realists of the USA at the turn of the 20th century, the epoch which is characterized not only by considerable social shifts but also by significant transformation of thinking. In his stories, the writer ponders over the moral state of modern American society of his time and emphasizes the growth of the personality's amorality and aggression. He continually forces his heroes to make their choice revealing the inconsistency of human nature and demonstrates in addition the ability of the great expert at writing profoundly and on a good scale to elucidate acute problems in the small literary form.
