The Adventures of Tom Sawyer / Пригоди Тома Сойера (American Library)
Твен М.
How should the boys employ their time if they are bored to death with their lessons and their school holidays are still far off? Several true friends and a little bit of imagination — and a dull fence whitewashing turns into an entertainment which will bring a lot of boys' treasures; the game of pirates and robbers will allow to feel free-and-easy life though it will make their grown-ups worry a great deal; and the night visit to the graveyard will make them heroes of the whole town. True, they should not be scared to meet the chimerical ghosts and cruel filthy thieves, but display nobility even when harsh punishment is inevitable. But these are trivial matters if real treasures and life full of adventures are waiting for you.

This side of paradise = По цей бік раю
Фіцджеральд Ф.С.
"This Side of Paradise" is the first great literary work created by the American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896—1940) which immediately brought him universal acknowledgement. An enchanting youth, full of radiant dreams and hopes for the dazzling prospects at the beginning of the novel, having lost his friends in the war, having experienced tragedies in love, being out of means of subsistence, finds himself on "this side of Paradise" and tries to find the right niche for himself. Such is not only the main hero's fate but that of the author himself and his generation burnt by the First World War. The novel attracts the reader owing to its veracity and deep psychological analysis of the characters' behaviour. These qualities make it interesting and topical for the readers in Ukraine as well as in the whole world.

Daddy-Long-Legs / Довгоногий дядечко (English Library)
Webster J.
A moving and filled with humor novel "Daddy-Long-Legs" by the American writer Jean Webster (1876—1916) is a story of an orphaned girl told in the letters to her guardian whom she had never seen before. He sent her for studying at a college on condition that every month she would write letters to him. To his judgment, she, being a gifted girl, could become a good writer and writing letters regularly would help a great deal in this matter. Judy carries out the stipulated condition with great pleasure: she studies at the college with absorbing interest; her life is full of various events and adventures; she herself is eager to candidly tell somebody her thoughts and emotional experiences, to confide her first love to somebody. The book has quite an unexpected ending which evokes in the reader the feeling of warm and offers hope for happiness.

King Solomons Mines / Соломонові копальні (English Library)
Fitzgerald F.Scott
In the heart of each child, at least once in their lifetime, there arose a dream about great treasures, the more such incalculable as those of the wise King Solomon's Mines. An English writer H. Rider Haggard (1856—1925) must have been such a dreamer. His book "King Solomon's Mines" is a novel filled with the spirit of romance and subtle English humour in which courageous travellers set out for the journey into the bloomy country of Kukuanas getting over scorching sands of the desert and cold rocky slides of the mountains. Each of them has his own goal. And each of them gets what he deserves: some of them get treasures, some of them — the power by descent, and some — fair wages of perpetration.

The Ranson of Red Chief and Stories / Викуп за вождя Червоношкірих та інші оповідання (English Library)
Henry O.
The proposed collection of literary works by O. Henry (William Sidney Porter, 1862—1910), besides the story "The Ransom of Red Chief", includes such masterpieces of his creative heritage as "The Indian Summer of Dry Valley Johnson" "A Blackjack Bargainer" "A Retrieved Reformation" and others. Many of them were screened more than once. Behind the alternation of adventures and situations, humor, irony or sarcasm, there expressively arise the author's reflections on human being, their aspirations for love, kindness, and happiness. The author's inexhaustible creative imagination strikes the reader. As a rule, his stories have a sudden ending. They enrapture and move, and what is most important, they always bear optimism and give hope.
