The tragedy "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" by William Shakespeare (1564—1616) is one of the best-known dramatic works of world literature. Even among Shakespeare's masterpieces, "Hamlet" stands out for its exquisite depth, the intricacy of the contents and problems. The plot of the tragedy goes back to the ancient Scandinavian saga about vendetta. But in the image of Hamlet, before us there arises not an ordinary personage-revenger but a thinker, a new human being who tries to comprehend his time, his relations with his friends and enemies; and, as a result, he arrives at a conclusion that the world is imperfect, mercenary, and treacherous; and that there is no harmony in it which his soul is craving for.
